And sometimes we just have fun!

The Cape Town Cycle Tour was shortened this year, following the devastating fires over the peninsula. While Sunday 8th was clear of fire, the terrain would have been unsafe, with ash and embers on the road, ready to be whipped op in any gust.

But thanks to the firefighters the race could proceed. Not as a true race – no records could be set on the shortened course – but in honour of those who had made it safe to race again. Continue reading “And sometimes we just have fun!”

Our First Reading Corners

The Literacy Committee has been hard at work deciding on new approaches to make a practical difference to our learners. We are involved in various ways, developing libraries, donating books, and with mentors such as Wordworks and Literacy for All.

Following on international trends we have decided to implement ‘Reading Corners’ wherever possible in our Primary Schools. These corners are like mini-libraries situated in the class. They contain only age-appropriate books and are designed to be areas where the child can relax and read during a break or a quiet time.

On Saturday 14th Feb we donated our first reading corners to the 3 Grade 1 classes in Perivale Primary. Very bright and cheerful, they help to liven up the rooms. Once we hear from the teachers how successful these are, we will expand into G2 and G3, and then into other schools.

Kids Day Out 2015

Every year our club takes a group of learners on a ‘Kids Day Out’. It has generally been a fun filled day at the beach, but as of this year we decided that there should be an educational aspect, so we chose theΒ  Two Oceans Aquarium in the Waterfront.

On Saturday, 31 January we took 37 Grade 3 learners from Perivale Primary and their teachers to the Aquarium. It was an hectic, but exciting day.

The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the sea life especially the touch pool. The aquarium followed by lunch and Spur. We ended the day with a visit to the scratch patch and gave each child a bag to fill with gem stones to take home, as a token to help them remember the day by.

Our club aims to do more projects like this throughout 2015.

Induction of Transferee Member: Kit Schreiber

On 15th January we were proud to induct a new member – Kit Schreiber – into our club.

Kit is a long-time Rotarian, having been with RC Beacon Bay forΒ  31 years, where he has especially been involved with the Youth Exchange programme. He has now transferred to Cape Town, and has been a frequent guest over the past few months. Once he got to know us, we are happy to report he is confident he will enjoy his stay here.

As Kit is already a Rotarian, President Jackie presented him with a ‘Service above Self’ pin.

Kit Schreiber welcomed to the club by President Jackie.
