Last Night of The Proms

The Proms Story – A step back in time

The first of the famous Proms concerts, conducted by the founder Sir Henry Wood, was performed on August 10, 1895. Sir Henry continued as conductor until his death in 1944.

The tradition of providing concerts “for the people” has been maintained for more than a hundred years and continues to grow in popularity, with seasons which now extend over many weeks in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Through additional exposure on radio and television, the “Proms” are now enjoyed by millions of music-lovers worldwide.

25 years of Proms in Cape Town

The Last Night of the Proms was first presented by the Rotary Club of Wynberg at the City Hall of Cape Town in 1986 as a charity event. Capetonians and visiting Promenaders now regard the Proms as an annual musical highlight in this city and public support has been overwhelming and generous.

The dual objectives of promoting the enjoyment of glorious music and making significant charitable contributions are being fulfilled with great success.
