Sailing and Youth Development Project

The sailing development programme was started nearly 20 years ago as a joint project between the Rotary Club of Wynberg and Zeekoevlei Yacht Club. At the time we were using two borrowed boats and had no facilities. Since then we have managed to create the Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre, an IYFOR accredited training venue. As an independent NPO we have built up a fleet of racing and training dinghy’s, have our own club house and coaching facilities, and share workshop and launching space with the yacht club.

Over the years hundreds of children have come to enjoy the pleasure of sailing and for some of them it has become an important part of their life. Our competitive sailors have excelled nationally and internationally and others have gone on to careers in the boating industry. Teachers and parents of the sailors have noticed a significant difference in their attitude and commitment to school and community.

The training programme has grown from serving one school once a week to six days a week covering six different schools and club racing on the seventh day. Approximately 100 children a week, ranging in age from 8 to 18 are involved in this highly successful project.
