Rotary continues to sail
Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre where Wynberg has had over 15 years of involvement again demonstrates the impact this has on youths from our communities. Sailing has brought these youngsters out of gangs and on to the water where they are captains of their dreams. They become stronger mentally, physically and emotionally when they develop the sailing skills required to navigate wind, currents and fatigue.
Here are some pictures from recent regattas. Unfortunately due to the drought in Cape Town, the vlei’s water levels have been too low for the centre to sail regularly and they have had to revert back to winter training schedules, however thanks to Hout Bay Yacht Club they have managed to train and remain competitive in many of the local championships. Up next is the Western Cape Sonnet Championships. Good Luck crew!
Here a few highlights of the crews achievements thus far.
The Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre based in Zeekoevlei trains youth from various communities the values of sailing. Through sailing they are able to address several qualities (Leadership, teamwork, communication, respect, planning, training, studying, natural sciences, boat repair and maintenance) that these youngsters struggle with and may save many from being influenced to joining gangs, giving up school and find a career through sailing.
