Wynberg Responds to TEARs Fire 2025

The Rotary Club of Wynberg stepped in after the devastating September 2025 fire in Noordhoek swept through a large section of TEARS Animal Rescue, destroying boundary walls, dog shelters and critical infrastructure, and putting vulnerable animals at risk.

TEARS in Kommetjie provides shelter for abandoned and rescued cats and dogs. Before the fire, many of its kennels and boundary structures were built from wooden pallets and timber, which made them especially vulnerable when flames spread from a neighbouring property. The fire tore through fencing, kennels and fittings, leaving urgent rebuilding work behind.

What followed was an immediate and compassionate response. Rotary Club of Wynberg Service Director Stacy Edward contacted TEARS as soon as news of the fire broke to ask a simple but important question: how could Rotary help?

The need was clear: TEARS had to rebuild, but not simply replace what was lost. The goal was to rebuild smarter, with future fire risks in mind. Rotary quickly committed to funding and constructing 51 metres of Vibracrete walling to strengthen security and help protect the property from similar disasters in future.

During a site visit in December 2025, Rotary members saw first-hand how much safer the new wall already made the facility. On that same scorching summer day, Club President Justin Schonegevel pledged additional support by providing a splash pool for every kennel so that the dogs could stay cool in the heat. Rotary went on to purchase 36 shell pools for the shelter.

In January 2026, the club hosted a visit to the project for the District Governor, highlighting not only the recovery effort but also the wider role TEARS plays in the community. Through free veterinary services, improved animal welfare and support for vulnerable communities, TEARS continues to make a meaningful difference across the South Peninsula.
