To create conditions which will assist in the efficient delivery of primary health care to nearly 200 000 people in Retreat.
For 13 years the Rotary Club of Wynberg has participated in upgrading essential facilities at the much run down health care centre. The initial project consisted of improving the patient reception area and the pharmacy, which were totally unacceptable.
This was a very extensive project estimated at R1.6 million, and needed multiple donors.
The Rotary Club of Wynberg initiated successful discussions with the Western Cape Province to come on board to better the conditions, and together with funds from Wynberg Rotary Club, Nittedal Rotary Club in Norway and Rotary International, sufficient funds were raised, and the project was finalized in 2005.
The second phase included a new wing for an urgent need for a dedicated HIV/AIDS clinic in the south of the City. This project was approved for commencement by the province 2008/2009, and provided an ideal opportunity for a Rotary Matching Grant between our partner in Norway, Nittedal Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Wynberg. The grant was to provide the necessary equipment and furnishings for the new building. The new HIV/AIDS clinic was officially opened in 2010.
There is a desperate need for redeveloping the hopelessly inadequate maternity and obstetrics unit. At this stage it does not look as Retreat Community Health Centre is among the first of the provincial list for a new maternity unit.
